Plan Typewriter
Plan 9’s Missing Keys: Reviving UNIX’s Typewriter Legacy

philosophy

Looks like people like terminal-centric and keyboard-driven interfaces. More usual expirience for UNIX users.

UNIX legacy was not so bad that it should be so easily abandoned.

If you don’t like it - just not use it.

This is attempt to re-create a development environment where:

  • No mouse needed
  • Apps could be expandable
  • CUA - one love

The project will adhere to the key ideas of UNIX:

  • Every program does one thing and does it well
  • Text-based interfaces prevail over graphical ones
  • Composition via pipelines instead of monolithic applications
  • Simplicity of implementation is more important than functional redundancy

◈ key goals

  • Reincarnation of terminal-centric interface for Plan 9
  • Integration with modern systems via plan9port
  • Educational resource on the history of operating systems
  • Minimalistic alternative to modern tools
